So a lot of the families blogs have been talking about Ernesta week and all but no one seems to know the orgins of it. I am hear to clear that up. About 10 years ago my parents had some neighbors that had three dogs. One was a small pug named Ernesta. This dog would stand in the yard and bark at anyone coming down our driveway. One day Jenny and Heather were sitting out on my parents front porch and heard the neighbors yelling at Ernesta. Jenny made a comment that Ernesta sounded like a holiday. So that day we had an Ernesta Fiesta. Ernesta day always falls on the Saturday closest to June 10th. Fast forward to the next year and that is when we started doing the Pizza day menu. Monday hot dogs, Tuesday tacos, Wednesday hamburgers and chocolate milk, Thursday sloppy Joe's and burritos in a bag Friday pizza day best day of the week!

I am not sure if International Pirate Day was originally tied to Ernesta Day but I can tell you the orgins of that as well. Aunt Judy had a whiteboard calendar on her refrigerator. One day Stephen Thomas their neighbor randomly wrote International Pirate Day on it. On that day we celebrated and got a cake. Ever since then we always have a cake on IPD.

Hope this is helpful to clear up the reason we actually celebrate Ernesta week. If I am wrong on any of the details let me know. I want to make sure I am historically accurate. Who knows maybe someday it will be a nationally recognized holiday!

someday when Ryan Stewart goes into space we will need to call it intergalactic Ernesta Week
Thank you for this history lesson - as there was no real logical reason to explain to people - at least there is a semi-crazy reason. I used to just say some crazy thing kids in my family came up with. I put a link to your blog on our page :) - Valerie
Talk about a family that just loves tradition. I think at that time we were so into inside jokes that we started it. But who would even stop such a fun tradition. I can totally see my grandkids someday having an Ernesta Fiesta and they will ask how it started thinking it's some great story. And I'll say, "It all started with a dog named Ernesta." And they will be even more confused.
haha....thanks for the history lesson! but there is one very minor change that probably doesn't really make a difference...
modification to the origins of international pirate day:
the part about steven writing it on the whiteboard was correct...but he actually wrote the date for the next saturday (what we now call international pirate day)...and your mom came to our house with a big "happy international pirate day " cake....we were all very confused until she pointed out to us that it was on our calendar and that it NEEEDED cake...so I think we owe it to your mom for making international pirate day the real deal rather than just a couple words on a calendar.THANK YOU AUNT KAREN!!!! :)
